WCI – Roscommon International Women’s Day Event
WCI Roscommon is inviting women from all over County Roscommon to Gleeson’s Townhouse, Roscommon on Thursday, February 23rd for a special planning event to mark International Women’s Day this March.
Members of the WoMeN’s (Western Midlands and Northern) Regional Caucus will mark International Women’s Day this March with a complete reversal of the gender balance in a number of county council chambers throughout the West, Midlands and Northern region. County Roscommon is one of the councils taking part in this collaborative event.
The theme that the WoMeN’s Regional Caucus has adopted for International Women’s Day is “Embracing Equity” and this fits really well with WCI Roscommon’s vision of supporting women and their families throughout Co. Roscommon through a wide variety of activities and initiatives. Roscommon Women’s Network recognises the importance of equal and equitable representation by women in all aspects of society, including local politics to ensure that decision-making is balanced and just at county council level.
The network is co-ordinating this event and we previously held a meeting in January to discuss plans, and the meeting on Thursday, February 23rd at 7pm is an attempt to further these plans. Board Member with RWN, Rita Kearney explained:
“Women make up a small percentage of local councillors across Ireland and we only have four female councillors in Co. Roscommon. In the future, we want to address this imbalance in representation by encouraging and supporting women to familiarise themselves with what is involved and to prepare for the local elections in 2024”.
