Connection Through Craft – Empowering Women Through Craft

This Monday on World Art Day, staff of Women’s Collective Ireland attended an event organised by Ronanstown Women’s Community Development Project and Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation. The event, Connection Through Craft, was created to celebrate marginalised women and help them to build connections between one another and ourselves. Funded by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, the project’s conclusion turned into a day to honour the women and everything they have accomplished due to the initiative.

Connection Through Craft aimed to empower women through the medium of craft, which offered marginalised women the opportunity to explore creativity, and their community, to eliminate isolation, racism and social injustice. The seven-month-long programme provided women with the necessary space to connect via craft, to learn from one another, and to express themselves.

We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to artist Fiona O’ Neill for recognising the vision of this project and making it a reality, to the Dominican Justice Office Ireland for donating materials for this project, and finally, we would like to The Towers Direct Provision Centre for providing us with a safe space to engage with the women in their centre.
